Sign Of The Times – Tesco Brownhills

Tesco Sign at Brownhills - High Street Walkthrough Ramp View (Tesco Brownhills Store - Feb 2012)

I know times are hard in the current financial climate but isn’t it about time the bohemath supermarket retailer Tesco, sends an aid package in one of their daily deliveries to the Brownhills store. Everytime I walk towards the store from the High Street I glance up at this sign and think… wow, that is one dilapidated , shabby but very original sign.

Correct me if I am wrong but I am pretty sure this is the original sign that was erected when Tesco moved into the building after Hillards had vacated. I’m guessing at least 20 years have passed and the sign still remains, untouched and in a state of disrepair. I know that the location is on the side of the building and if you drive onto the car park you would never see this view unless you walk through to the High Street. Maybe that is one of the reasons why it has never been updated with the times. Nobody knows that it is there!

Car Park View - Main Entrance (Tesco Brownhills Store - Feb 2012)

The photograph above shows that at least sometime since Tesco arrived in Brownhills, someone in authority there has made the decision to replace the sign above the main entrance. This sign is the one most people get to see when they drive down Silver Street and past Tesco Petrol Station on the left hand side. This sign appears to be from the late 90’s or very early 00’s according to their marketing scheme / logo’s. Although this too could now do with a touch of paint.

There is one more sign that is just around the corner and faces out towards the canal. You can just about see it in the photo above and I will aim to upload a photo of the view from the canal towpath in the near future. The sign is again, I believe one of the original signs. It is a duplicate copy of the sign in the first photo although appears to be in “pristine” condition with all the white background remaining.

I am a regular customer in the supermarket and don’t really have a lot to complain about, I’m a satisfied shopper who returns week after week, like so many other residents in Brownhills are. Do the dilapidated signs detract from the main purpose of the building…. I guess not, but a new sign would make all the difference to the aesthetics of Brownhills. Well maybe not actually… but it would be a start.

***** Further Update *****

Courtesy of Google Street View, I have now obtained the below photograph of the view of the remaining side sign. This is best seen from the canal side or from the top of a Google Street View vehicle.

Canal View of Sign... Fairly good condition too! (Tesco Brownhills Store - 2009)

As you can see… the sign is in fairly good condition. Maybe Tesco are waiting for the style to return so that it will become modern again… just like the 70’s and 80’s clothes and toys that have come back into fashion over recent years.
